Synthetic vs Natural Diamonds, Maybe not all that its made out to be.

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

When it comes to buying diamonds, there are two main options: natural and synthetic. While synthetic diamonds may seem like a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative, there are several benefits to choosing a natural diamond that make it a more valuable and sustainable option in the long run.

Synthetic or natural diamond? Which is the better option?

Comparing Natural & Synthetic Diamonds

One of the biggest advantages of natural diamonds is their long-term value. As a natural resource, the supply of natural diamonds is limited, making them a valuable and sought-after commodity. In contrast, synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory and their value decreased significantly over time and will continue to do so in the future.

Another recent benefit of natural diamonds is their sustainability. In recent years, there have been significant improvements in sustainable diamond mining practices. Many diamond mines now operate under strict environmental and ethical guidelines, making sure that the natural diamonds are mined in a responsible and sustainable way. Some by self will and some by law, mining companies are increasingly investing in local communities and are making a concerted effort to re-invest in the well being of the communities and countries that share their land with mining companies. Synthetic diamonds, on the other hand, are mass produced with high-heat and high-pressure methods using huge amounts of energy. Almost all synthetic diamond manufacturers are based in countries using coal fired electricity generation and low employment standards. These factories only benefit their owners and employees to some extent, ultimately drawing money away from the communities that benefit directly from natural diamond extraction.

When buying a diamond, it is important to consider not just the cost, but also the value and sustainability of the diamond. While synthetic diamonds may seem like a cost-effective option in the short term, natural diamonds offer proven long-term value, uniqueness and can be an ethically and environmentally responsible choice. Its up to you , the consumer to make sure that what you are buying is traceable and ethically mined. It's always better to invest in something that not only sparkles naturally but also has a deeper meaning, holds true value and has contributed to the wellbeing of another human being.

In conclusion, natural diamonds offer a unique and timeless beauty that cannot be replicated in a laboratory. They also hold a long-term value, and can be mined responsibly with sustainable methods. On the other hand, synthetic diamonds may be cheaper but they lack the uniqueness and value that natural diamonds possess and also can have a negative environmental impact. When making a diamond purchase, it's important to consider not just the cost, but also the long-term value and sustainability of the diamond.
